How does it work? As finger(s) touch(s) the sensor screen, analog signals are generated and transformed into digital signals by a controller IC. Once those signals are received and translated by a driver program, the screen monitor shows up the exact touched positions.

Based on different structures and sensing methodologies, there are three major types of touch panels available in market; resistive, capacitive, saw, optic and electromagnetic.

Our human body is filled with conductive electrolytes. Capacitive touch technology is by detecting changes of capacitance when finger(s) or other conductive media touch the panel.

As if the touch panel stays unaffected, there exists capacitance in between layers. When finger(s) touch(s) the touch panel, the human body’s static electricity changes the value of capacitance on the touch panel surface. The controller IC detects the change of such value, defines the relative positions of touch points and feedbacks to the computer as digits.

The structure of touch panels consist sensor, controller IC and software. The sensor is the main part of touch panels. Its function is to detect and receive input signals. The controller IC is to calculate the pressure signals received by the sensor, transforms analog signals to digital signals, and passes on the signals. The software is in charge of connecting data processing and communicating with the controller IC,  the signals delivered by the controller IC.

Capacitive touch technology can also be applied to touchpad on handheld computer devices. Such capacitive touch panel controller translates the analog signals into digital signals that are detected by a sensor, then, through the PS/2 port, the data is transferred to the driver for definition. By various driver program and function designs, the capacitive touchpad can be upgraded for multi touchpad with various gesture interaction.
